Will a older 351 Drop down into my 1997 F150 4x4?

OK i have a 1997 F150 4x4 with the 4.6. I was thinking about it and decided to junk the 4.6 and just go old school and drop a built 351 into the truck and not have to worry about EFI, just if i should drop a 650 or 750CFM carb on it. I really havent seen a newer truck with a swap like this. will the swap fit. Will a set of shorty headers fit and what tranny would be a good fit if any?

you may need a custom oil pan to clear diff if it is not lifted. your dash may not work if you pull the computer and harness out. youll have to fab up some motor mounts, find a trans from a 302 or 351 4x4 truck and possibl a tcase if the pattern is different.with a heavy truck you need to try to maintain a high area under the torque curve to keep driveability good. that being said, i would start with a 600cfm and dyno it to see where your power is being made.too much carb can be very bad. you can make most anything fit as i have seen a 514 in a 2wd 97 but it is a lot of work.

well im going to do a lift kit on it so i hope ill be able to get a pan to fit it. I planned on rippin out hte dash anywase and bulding a custom autometer set up since i was going to beefe the engine up and i want to know all the temps and pres on the fluids. But it will be alot cheaper to build a more power out of the old school 351 than it woul dbe to try wo build a newer engine and i love the power and sound of a big cammed out motor .

I've seen a '97+ with a 460 on the web so it must fit. Yer on yer own for mounts and such. Ya want a C6 auto or a stick?

I hear ya though, pushrods forever!

Make sure that you check your local laws.

Some states will not register a truck with an engine that is older than the model year of the vehicle...or with an engine that wasn't originally offered.

Though there are certainly ways around such issues
