engine swap question???

I have access to a 4.6 liter out of an 2006 with 10k miles on it. I currently have a 2001 with a 4.6 in it. Its got just under 200k miles on it . Still running strong.
He wants $800 for the engine and $800 for the trans.
How hard would it be to do this swap? What else would I need? Tis is in the truck still, so I could get most of what I would need from it. Would the best thing be to get an engine from a pre 2004?
Just thinking through my options. I know that $800 is a good price. I'm not trying to put the cart before the ox, just thinking about being prepared. My sons trucks got 235k miles (5.4 L) as well. I just have a feeling I'm gonna need an engine before this years up.
I haven't swaped an engine in many years.

Still looking for feedback on this. I don't know how long this engine might be available. Is $800 a steal or just a good price? How about the trans @ $800 as well?

Yes it can be done and it's not that difficult.

I posted a thread about my swap of a 2004 engine into my 1997 truck recently. Here it is ...

The main diffence I'd see is you won't have to deal with removing the COPs.

I'd suggest you reuse your old wiring harness as some pinouts may be specific to your model year.

You may not have to swap the timing covers, but check compare the mounting location of your Power Steering Pump to make sure.

Also you'll want to keep a copy of the donor vehicles VIN number and Build Date, as if you ever need Engine parts, that you didn't swap from your '01, you will need them.

Good luck and feel free to ask away,

Doug

P.S. And yes if you can get the Transmission too I'd grab that up too. You may want to reseach it, but I think an '06 tranny will work in an '01. Reuse your wiring harness again and double check the pinouts on the plugs at the tranny to make sure that they go to the same things (With a schematic)
