Same thing here as described by cookie_minster. I've got an 05 SCAB 5.4 with about 30000 on it. I'm not exactly sure about the temps when it does it but I seems to happen more the colder it is. I'm calling the dealership this week.

Some good suggestions. jbrew's may not solve my particular problem as it happens when the vehicle isn't moving and mine doesn't seem to be coming from the fan clutch, but I'll give that a better listen as well. GIJoeCam had a good idea and I'll check that out too . . . . personally I'm with chris iowa02 and the alternator, that seems to be a little more of a common suggestion on the 2004-2005's but I'll check it all. Thanks gents . . . anybody else? I'm getting better suggestions here than the dealer's got that's for sure.

Add mine to the list

My '05 Screw (5.4) starting doing the "whistle" last week. First time it was showing -1* on the temp. Same rpm range (1600-1800ish) and went away after a few minutes. It seems to happen right before the truck shifts?

I called the dealership and the Service guy (who's been solid and helpful in the past) was at a loss??? I specifically asked him if he'd heard of the F150's doing this and he replied "no".

Then I get on here and see a recent two page thread about the malady. I'm going to print this thread out and give it to my service department.

This morning (-2*) the noise persisted a little longer than the other occassions and did it on the highway at almost 60 mph before stopping.

Drives me nuts!!!

I swapped a 2002 5.4 into my 97 and added a lightning upper plenum and i have a strange whistle at times especially cold and i think it has narrowed itself down to the iac and related hoses.

I usually only get the whistle while driving on a cold day. Anyways, I popped the hood and the noise on mine is coming from the fan clutch. Not sure what's in the fan clutch that can whistle, but I'm 99% sure thats where it's comin from. Once the outside temp warms up above freezing, I never hear it again.
Don't be too sure, that's exactly what I thaught, so it accelerated me getting e-fans, whistle remains. E-fans are cool though. I still think it's a pulley. The stupid thing is I can never hear it under hood, just in the cab. The 04/05's mentioned in here it seems is a weatherstrip problem, top of the windshield I think.

I have the 2004 5.4 that I just bought in January. Right off the bat I noticed the high pitch whistle consistently at 1800-2000 rpms while driving. It happens more often in temperatures between -15 to -30 C but I've also noticed it from 0 to -10 C on occasion.

So far, I've brought it into the dealer twice with no resolve. The first time they said it was the foglight issue and they apparently sealed it up. Obviously it was still there, then the second time they said they couldn't make a definitive diagnosis.

I just noticed today that the noise occurs in the neutral position as well. It happened at around 1400 rpms in the driveway. Since it's not wind related , I'm suspecting a vaccuum leak.

I'm calling the other Ford dealer in town today to see if they can do something.

This noise is very annoying.

Exclamation

I had a '03 Mountaineer w/4.6 and now this '04 Expedition w/5.4. Both of these trucks make this high pitched whinning sound coming from the engine compartment. And like most on here, it only does it when it's cold outside.
But, I've only heard it do it when I was driving the vehicle, never at idle. I thought it was just my Mountaineer until I purchased this Expedition. I wonder if it's coming from the throttle body. Like most on here, mine will get louder or stop depending on the pressure of the throttle. That's what makes me think it throttle body related. It's got to be something common with the engines since I've had two different vehicles make this same noise. Common link, Ford engines. Hope this helps.

So I took it into a different Ford dealer and they diagnosed a noisy alternator. They changed it, and I haven't heard it since.

Whistle in dash pass side

02 v6 F150 standard cab.
Whistle under dash between the center and pass side.
Whistle when you turn the key off and when slowing to a stop.
Almost sounds like a whistle/whine/or small motor bearing.
It doesn't change with fan speed switch.

Where should i start looking.

Thanks.

04 and up f-150's pretty much all have this problem. its caused by the bearings in the alternator... replaced probably 200 of them at my dealership

Did it this morning on the way to work, again when I went to lunch and again when I came home...high today was 30 and that was about 3 pm. Mine is bone stock .
You have a supercharger. They do that.

out of the blue i developed a whistle can be heard with engine running or reving in park just at speed (constant) so maintianing 30 or 55 mph you here it and it is loud. when it happens if you throttle it or let off the pedal it will go away at speed if you coast you wont hear it.

i have the same problem with my 06SC 5.4L. You can hear it while parked (idle and part throttle) or while driving at slower speeds.
