Service Engine Soon light...

Hi All,

I tried to do a search but did not find anything. The "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Does that mean the computer has picked up a trouble code? How should I diagnose this? 2000 F-150 SCrew, 5.4 Triton. My truck is at 101,600 miles. So far it has run and drives great. Please advise F-150 Gods. Thank you.

The next step is head to Auto Zone and get the code read. They do that free of charge in most areas.

Except California, last I heard.... which is where he is at.

If the light is on and there are no apparent drivability issues, then it is most likely a detected fault in one (or more) of the emissions sub-systems.

Only by reading the fault codes will you learn what the fault codes actually are. This may require your either purchasing or borrowing a scan tool or by taking it to a shop for scanning. Very basic code readers start at about $40 on ebay or at Harbor Freight, about $65 at Walmart. Once you have the fault code(s), you can THEN begin your diagnosis.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll purchase an auto scanner. Ford charges $75 to diagnose the code. I might as well buy the scanner and check it myself. I hope it's nothing serious. I'll post what I find.
