I changed out the # 1 cop and it runs great!! Thanks to all, especially jbrew, for your help. One more quick question, does this indicate that I will have others go out and should probably replace all of them? They are not cheap, as I found out....... The engine has 150,000 miles on it and I am the second owner, not knowing if they have ever been changed before.

Again thanks!!!

It's easy to get coil pac systems and COP's systems confused when referencing these modular motors. I got them confused quite a bit at first. Knowing what model years specked coil pack systems helps. The 97-00 4.6L motors have 2 coil packs , each coil pack is in charge of 4 cylinders and have 4 regular sparkplug wires coming from each.

COP (Coil On Plug) systems don't include wires and there more of a high tech design. Each cylinder has it's own dedicated coil with boot on top of each plug. All 5.4L's have these systems and 4.6's evolved with these systems 2001. Coil Packs were discontinued in the 4.6L at the beginning of 2001.

You can tell if they were changed by looking at the label on the COP - there color coded back then . They were green in 1998 , most likely a replacement wouldn't be green.

Replacing your COPs system at (150,000 miles) can be a very beneficial tune up for your motor at this point. COP's get weak on there own right around your mileage . You might want to get set up to change them all on your next plug change or in case you have another go out in the future .

You can get a set of 8 NEW COPs for around $100 from that ebay site . Use Motorcraft plugs on the 98 5.4L..

Global Automotive offers a kit for F150 - 8 Motorcraft Platinum plugs and Cop's for $130 . Global is an eBay store.

Thanks for the info jbrew. I think I will go ahead and purchase the kit and change them all out when it gets warmer here.

sorry for the lateness, but if it had been a blown plug, you'd a known it. It sounds like there is a helicopter under the hood

Yeah just had the weather channel on - Texas even had snow and ice , ice was like an inch thick!!

Let me know if you need the link , computer crashed recently so I lost my resource file - $%# #@^$!!! I didn't back that one up...

You could prolly find the COP's link searching within the "Engines" forum , I posted the link many times over the last year.
