2005 Motor Noise

I just bought my 2005 F-150 5.4L 4x4 it only has 24,000 miles on it. It makes a funny noise compared to my 1997 F-150 5.4L 4x4 I traded in. It is like when you start is up it sounds like there is no oil in it and when you drive it it sounds like a diesel. That is so weird does anyone know what I am talking about. I keep checking the oil to make sure it is still full and it is. And I have put 3,000 miles on it since I have bought it and no problems. So the funny noise probably is not major just weird.

I'm stumped. I have a 2005 F150 5.4L and the only noise I have noticed is some injector clicking at idle. This can be mistaken for valvetrain noise. If it only has 24,000 mi it is still under warranty. I would have a Mechanic from the local Ford Dealer have a listen.

It is much loader than Vavle train chatter that is for sure. I have taken it to two seperate Ford dealers to look it over and they tell me nothing is wromg with it. It is just concerning that it is so loud. I drove it 600 mile the day after I bought it on vacation and then 600 back and then around here and nothing has let go in the motor so I am just as stumped as you are.

mine does the same thing on occasion. If you change your own oil, it makes the same noise you are talking about for about 3-5 seconds. I was told it happens on all new 5.4 3v engines in the the lincon and ford cars, and the reason is that the oil pump cannot get oil to the engine fast enough. I am just repeating what I have been told, I am not certain that is the cause of the noise though.

Do a search in the 2004 + Forum. This has been talked about numerous occasions and there is some great info to be found.

If that does not solve the problem, and it is a light ticking sound muck like the old fasioned lifters, it may be your fuel injection system, that is normal. If it is louder than that, more of a knock, it may be the cam phaser for which there is a TSB. Do a search on cam phaser.

I'd change the oil (5w20) and filter (both Motorcraft ONLY) and see if it goes away. I had a '97 F150 that would clack like crazy until I went with EXACTLY the recommended oil and filter. I stuck a Fram on it once and it sounded like the crank was gonna come out. It's weird how sensitive these engines are to correct oil and filters.
