either way you need to remove it and the new COP's come with a new boot.

Possible...It could also be the wiring harness setting to close the the acumulator - that will cause a misfire aswell..
There is other possibilities, there just not as common ..
I know this is a late post, but trying to help future readers.
I am just now going through a similar problem on #2 and #3. Turns out boots are bad. A bad boot is usally is somewhat burnt and hard. Squeezing the plug end will reveal cracking. Some stores carry the boot only for $5 to $10. It also comes with a new connection spring between the C.O.P and plug. Much cheaper fix than a new C.O.P which range from $30 to $80. Spoke with a dealer mechanic and he confirmed that most shops will replace the all 8C.O.P.s to simplify their job vs. chasing down the actual problem.

I'll try to help you - For $60 I was able to get all 8 COP's - NEW!
Replacing all COPs is the best thing you can do for your ignition system on a high milage motor. You will find out in the near future when your problems come back again
People get these deals by coming here and asking for help.
If your trying to help great - If your bashing this site , you loose..
60 bucks - and they came with bolts and boots

Without a light, you can only chase down a bad COP with a history reader (mode 6) - If someone sees the COP's are old - replacing is the best thing.. Dealerships - Mechanics No this.
An old COP system , you have multiple misfires that go undetected until they get bad enough to notice. Shortly after you notice it , you'll receive a light directing you to your first failure on a high milage motor..Fix that one, good, great!! Get prepared for another soon..

I just sent for the $7.50 connector (mine looked cracked and the plug was rusty at cap end and the spring was all loose[maybe from the swelling rust]). I already isolated the problem to the cop by moving it the next cylinder over and getting a misfire reading on that. Now I'm just being my cheap self
. I looked for jbrew's cheap coil set on ebay, they were out. $60 sure sounds alot better than $800. And I wonder what that would be with labor

Yeah , I'm running the 60 dollar ones - there Ford originals from motorcraft . They came from the Romeo plant off a Crown Vic crate motor..Bought those last spring.

Buuuut about a year ago, all this same s^^t happened again and I was just fed up with it and took it to the dealer for them to figure it out. They said they could run a diagnostic on it for $65, which was MORE than worth the hassle! While I was waiting, I got to thinking about these computers and wondering if they had updates like a personal computer's BIOS, so I went and asked the service manager. He said..... "I dunno, let me go ask one of the mechanics." So we both went out there and talked to the mechanic about it. As it turned out, I had like the 6th revision on my computer and they were up in the 20's so I had them flash it for me with the newer updated firmware. They didn't even charge extra for it. They found out the #7 COP was bad, I paid my bill and set out for Autozone to buy YET ANOTHER COP. As soon as I pulled out on the street from the dealer, the CEL started blinking!!!! Now, if it EVER has so much as a HINT of a miss, the CEL comes on right then, even after I re-loaded my custom tune back on it!
Now I don't have to chase these f^^king misses anymore. As soon as it starts, the CEL starts blinking. I love it! Still HATE the F^^KING COP BULLS^^T, but I love that the CEL actually serves a f^^king function now!!!!
So if you have to push the truck hard and _HOPE_ you get a light at some point, or you don't get lights at all, take it to the dealer and have them update the firmware. I'll bet your CEL will start serving a purpose beyond decoration when you start the truck! If you are running a custom tune, reset it to factory when you take it in. After the update, you can always re-load it.
Haha , I'm glad I'm not the only one that went thru that once - I think what it boils down to is how bad the COP actually is - You went to the dealer , they used mode 6 and looked into your history is all.
Last spring I went threw that hell , went to the dealer and they quoted me $986 lol. I gave them a flying f-u and went to ebay spent $60 on a bran new set from Crown Vic crate motor - that fixed it and been running those ever since .. #8 went bad because it was drowned in fuel when my line slipped off two months ago. It started to miss - no light. I pushed it on the on ramp and got one.. I really think COP's go out in different ways.
