Fuel Gauge Going Out???
Fuel Gauge Going Out???
2002 F150 Super Crew 5.4 around 73K miles:
Not sure what topic this would be covered under so I am going to start here.
I noticed that my interior fuel gauge has been sitting just under half full for the past few days now. I had made some trips just within the past few days long enough (distance wise) to know it should have gone down but it has not.
I just got back from filling the tank full and the gauge reflects that now as well.
I guess my questions are these:
Does this sound like the fuel gauge is going out?
What type of device is Ford using to detect fuel level? Is it like some sort of float that is constantly measuring the level of the tank or is there something more sophisticated in there?
If it is a float is it common for the float to get "hung up" on something and by me filling my tank full again may have allowed it to become free again?
Could it be the dial on the dash not working correctly?
How hard of a repair would this be for the average do it yourselfer and cost for parts (depending if it is the device in the tank or the meter on the dash)?
I am going to monitor the gauge again and see what happens (lets hope I dont run out of gas somewhere).
Thanks!

just changed a fuel sender unit on one same year. Had to drop the tank to do it, but with patience, a helping hand, and good equiptment you can do it at home. After repair was done fuel gauge still has same problem. Using All Data for info source, I found no testing for the insturment cluster with out performing the removal of the tank. The float changes the reading to the gauge. After talking to afew places I found online, I gave up trying to find somewhere to repair the cluster. You have to go thru the Ford dealer in every case I found. When doing so they told me my milage would be marked as unkown on my title if researched??? This sounds really stupid to me, but three different dealers said the same thing. Good luck and let me know what works for you in the end. T
