Heater Core Replacement

I got in my truck today and noticed the smell of coolant. Later I looked down at the floor and there was a puddle of coolant on the passenger side floorboard. Called a friend of mine and he said I have a leak in the heater core. He said replacing it is a very difficult and time-consuming job. He told me that a quick fix is to take the hose going into the heater core and attach it to where the exit hose goes back into, well, whatever it goes into. Is this a good idea? It would only be short term, until I have a full day to spend replacing it. I assume this would mean that I would lose my heater, but I live in South Florida so that's not really a huge deal.
