cold start noises??

06 f150 5.4 4x4 1,500 miles.

When starting on a cold morning like today, (-2) engine will make a loud whirrrrr noise, or wined (SP?) up noise for about 2 or 3 seconds then stop, any idea on what this is?.

If it is plugged in, will not do it, and if temps about 20 or higher...

Also sometimes will hear a cling clang noise on some start ups for about 2 seconds or so..Like something is loses jiggling around....

I believe my wine(sp) is the power steering.
Make shur you have the thin oil and a good anti-drain back filter for the cling/clang noise

Mine has done the same thing for 160,000 + trouble free miles, yes, it is the power steering pump. I replaced the fluid, but it didnt seem to help much. I dont really think it is that much of a problem, since I have so many miles on it without failure.

I have owned both engines, 4.6 and 5.4. They both did the same during cold weather.

Mine too

The noise in mine is the fan clutch. When it's cold the viscous fan clutch oil is stiff for a min or so and causes the fan to spin at full RPM. once the fan turns and breaks the cold fan oil loose, the fan slows down to normal cool speed

Do a search on "start up noise" you will find that every year at this time there are many posts on this. And arguments as to what it is!

Apparently it is a normal sound.

The "Cling/Clang" you descibe is usually caused by a fram (Or other cheapie) filter, and or the improper use of 10w-30 and or it is just cold engine piston slap which is normal on a modern tight tolerance engine.

truck only has 1500 miles on it, but I was going in this week for an oil change, I will see if that helps. As far as the filter It is a motor craft, Right?
