Get a manual

I would get a manual specific to your vehicle ( it will probably cover several years 1997-???? as well as F-250) but if it includes the 1998 F-150 it will be specific to your vehicle. Haynes manuals are usually good at covering step by step instructions on big jobs. I'm sure you will get more suggestions, good luck.

Pull the intake before trying to hoist the engine up and out. Ford has a special lifting tool that makes things really easy, bolts in the valley of the engine, but you'll probably do fine hooking it at the heads on either side.

If you want I can scan and email the Ford Service Manual instructions for a 1997; I would imagine that most steps upto the '03 should be similar.

I'm also replacing my engine and finally pulled the engine today.

If your truck is a 2wd you will have a much easier time than I have.

As a matter of fact it has been such a pain that I placed an order for the Transmission and Transfer today. I don't want to have to f@%k with that crap again.

On the positive side, I've found the best time to install new spark plus and wires.

Good Luck,
Doug

i left my ps pump and pressure hose on the motor because it is a pain to get to the bolt behind the hose. be ready for breaking exhaust flange studs. make sure you jack up the trans with a 2x4 all the way across the pan. drain oil.take out radiator so you dont mess it up. take pictures. bag all bolts and label. don't drop a bolt in the intake ports.
