I wouldn't recommend it. Oils thicker than what's recommended may cause long term problems with the variable cam timing system. In addition, thicker oils take longer to reach important places in the engine.

Hi.

Go back, grab the twit by the nose, lead him over to the oil display section, & point to all the 5w-20 Motorcraft & Mobil1 oils in stock. Ask him if they are just for show.

Then, have him read (suspect he can't, but try anyway), or dictate the appropriate passages from your owner's manual that specifies oil usage.

Then, open your hood and point to the embossed '5w-20' yellow lettering ( again assumes he has any reading skills) on the top of the oil filler cap.

Finally, ask the Service Mangler if, by using 10w-30 in an unambiguous (use a simpler word here) factory recommended 5w-20 application, they will be covering any future oil-related engine issues.

Now you know why I do all my own maintenance.

Cheers
Bubba

An even better idea is to buy a 16mm combination wrench, a pair of oil filter pliers, and a drain pan; then the next step is to stay the hell away from Walmart for basic maintenance.

I've always used 5-30 Quaker State in my '02 5.4l because that is what has been put in it since new with no problems. Change it every 3000 miles.

Grab him by the nose, take him to the truck, pop the hood, and slam his face right down on the sticker that says 5w-20.

I would make a complaint to the manager as well.

Ford can and does use this as a reason to pull the trigger on your warranty. Any dumb SOB who is soooooo stupid should be stocking the shelves, not working in the service department.

God, I HATE stupid people! ESPECIALLY when it comes to those who we are SUPPOSED TO TRUST our 2nd most valuable possessions to (if you have a house, if not, it's probably #1).

For my 98, the manual says to use 5W30 not 5W20. So when everyone here talks about Ford recommending using the 5W20 is that just for the newer F150's or did they change their oil recommendation after my manual came out? What do I use in my 98 with the 5.4?

Hi.

A while back (search for the exact date & application info), Ford back-dated this recommendation to include a large number of older vehicles.

I think this was primarily a CAFE move; but as Quintin states, the new 3V's with VCT systems need the thinner stuff.

BTW Triton - they say imitation is the finest form of flattery - I'm flattered

Cheers

I have a 2000 5.4 in an Expedition, manual calls for 5-30, that is what I use. In my 2005, it calls for 5-20, that is what I use.

My truck has never even been in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and I hope it never is.
