check engine light is on

well I had some free time this afternoon, so decided I would remove my silencer. So I unplugged everything and pulled out the intake tubing, and after 5 minutes quickly realized I didn't have the tools to do it. So I put it back. Just a while ago I went to kroger, and when I got there noticed that my engine light was on, so when I got back I did an inspection and noticed that I forgot to plug the wire back into the tubing...not sure what it's for, but you know...the one that snaps back in. So I started it back up, drove around, but the light is still on. Everything is clamped tight, w/ no leaks or anything...will this go away? Cause I mean I know there's nothing wrong with it.

The light should reset after a few drive cycles. If not, just go by Auto Zone and have them hook up a scanner and reset light.

sweet deal thanks guys.

I was thinking..."man, I just replied to that no engine problems thread". heh...

on a side note, that silencer is a bitch to get out. It may just have to stay. Is it physically connected to the inside of the tubing? I'm afraid I'll tear it all up.

Yup, the silencer is a bi%^h to get out. Took me about a half an hour. It can be done without messing anything else up. Just take your time. I used a side cutter to snip some areas, the pry gently with flat blade screw driver. It is glued in on the edges.

Disconnecting the battery to clear the KAM not only erases any stored DTCs - it also clears the adaptive memory. The truck will probably run poorly for the first ~10 mi of varied driving.

It's better to clear codes with a scanner.

well I dont have a scanner, so I disconnected for 5 mins. took a second to start back up but the light is off now. didn't erase radio stations or settings, doors still lock when you put it into gear, and remote locks still work. so it didn't erase anything that I can tell. drove normal. thanks guys.

it should run fine with negative cable off for a few mins..everytime i do anykind of engine work, tune up etc.. i always undo negative cable. i read a story on here where this guy was working under his truck near near the fan, he rolled over and had the remote starter in his pocket.thing started up, mangled his hand in the fan

No, I've never forgotten that electricity only works when the circuit is complete. It doesn't matter where the circuit is broken (at the positive battery terminal, at the negative, at the load, after the load, anywhere in between, multiple points), current won't flow, and the EEC will lose power & its memory after ~5min.

But don't worry - I won't jump down your throat like you did that "casey" guy in the Transmission forum.

Wink

As far as I know, disconnecting the battery will not cause any station presets to be lost, no matter how long you leave it disconnected, on any Ford newer than say 1997 or so. The older models are certainly different, and would lose their presets without power...at least that is until you get back to the old pull/push to set buttons used on mid-80's and earlier models.

The presets are stored in a type of memory (flash memory...like the jump drives you see everyone carrying these days) that actually physically "writes" the info it is supposed to store. Power is only needed to write to or read from the memory, not for it to stay present. This is true for a variety of vehicle sub-systems.

Getting back to an earlier question...what is this silencer thing? I understand that it is supposed to help reduce the noise of air coming to the intake, but what does removing it do or not do to increase anything other than noise?
