C.E.L. code??
My check engine light is on. Wont stay reset. Guess I'll have to replace something. It comes up as " manufactuer controled aux. emission controls P1401". Can anyone shed some light as to what this might be?
Don't know if this is related to the same thing but I've noticed what sounds like some sort of exhust leak, or at least what sounds similar to one. It is only audiable on a loaded situation like when I accellerate slowly without it downshifting, or a real slow uphill drive. Kinda a "popping" sound.
My first thought was to make sure the plugs are all still tight. I didn't find any loose ones and I re-tourqued them all to 150 in. lbs.
Anyone got any thoughts or ideas??? Thanks, bullseye670..........

I believe that is an egr flow code, this is just off the top of my head I'm not for sure, but check the rubber lines coming to/from the EGR tube to the DPFE sensor (little box looking sensor with 2 hoses and a small harness) sometimes the hoses crack, or perhaps you have a bad EGR/Leak. The sensor itself (the metal version) is a common failure point and is replaced with a new plastic unit, as the old one corrodes and sends an incorrect fault to the computer.

I looked at the hose on the diaphram on the EGR, it looked ok. I have been under the hood a lot the past 2 weeks. I kinda thought mabe I did somthing.
I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. At least not on a casual look over. I've been at the plugs a few times and worked on the front diff. switch (vaccum motor). I ended up replacing that. That fixed my 4x4 problem.
I looked at all the vaccum lines to be sure they were pluged in but didn't really look for cracks.

There are two lines specifically dedicated to the DPFE sensor (not the egr valve/diaphram) they come from the metal EGR tube and go directly to the sensor, check those for cracking or disconnection, i'm not sure just how loud it would be with one disconnected, but I would make sound under similar circumstances to what you are describing, and would be a clear cause of the code.

P1401 is NOT a "low flow" code.
Call your dealer with your VIN #, the fault code, and your current mileage. You might be able to get a free DPFE. If not, just buy a new one and replace it.

I hate to ask this but what is the DPFE, its full name , and exactly where is it located? (2001 4.6 L.)

Well I checked the DPFE and didn't find any cracks or unpluged hoses. Not sure where to go from this point. I was thinking of taking the truck in to the dealer to have the cruise control recall done. Thought perhaps I'd bring this up. I don't normally take my truck to the dealer unless its still under waranty, and this one sure ain't. Just bought it a few weeks ago. 195k miles. The thing looks like new though. Doesn't run bad either. Just working out a few bugs. Don't recall this noise being there before.

MIL illumination with DTC P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401 and/or rough running, low power, surge and poor fuel economy all indicate problems with the DPFE sensor on the EGR system. If the vehicle has a tube-mounted DPFE sensor and one of these codes are present, the bulletin instructs to install a new sensor, P/N 2F1Z-9J460-AA.

Thanks a lot, jbrobeck! I'll check into getting a new sensor on Mon. and try to get it in Mon. night. I'll let you know what happens. How the heck did you come accross that bulletin?
