Wont Go Past 3K RPM

While I was test driving my truck Tuesday I put it in 4x4 low and didnt wait for it to engage and took off made a horrible thump and the engine failsafe came on. It has gone off now I tryed to pass a car earlier it wont go past 3K RPM it just spits and sputters. Whats going on here? Im gonna take it to the dealer in the morning Im just wondering what this could be.

Got my truck back from dealer today and they said it had a bad fuel filter. Replaced it and reprogamed PCM per TSB. So far it has fixed the problem. I have never haerd of a fuel filter going out so early the truck has 35,000 miles on it. Is this normal for it to go out like that?

Should be changed every 15,000, or once/year, max.

Search - 'tis common knowledge by now.

BTW - it took 'em 2 days to change a fuel filter and reflash the truck?

Cheers
Bubba

Well guys that not the case. Im starting to second guess my purchase now. It did not fix it this is what happens. Today while going making a hard left hand turn the truck just shut off. Then turn the key back on cranks fine runs fine until 3k rpm then its horrible. Last time it cut off while making a hard right turn and then only after that is when it runs like like crap and wont go past 3k rpm. Oh and hear is the catch only does it in DRIVE not IN Nuetral. What can this be the? IM lost and I think the dealer is to. The truck is still under factory warranty. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks

this is a tough one. has to be something elecrtical.pain to trace.wont go past 3k rpm huh?? fuel filter would just make it run like crap all the time.is the tranny slipping at all?? i almost want to say coil. i had a old dodge that had a bad coil. it would idle fine no problem,as soon as i put it drive she would die. lucky if i got into second gear

First thing I would try to determine is if the throttle body is being 'opening limited' by the " thottle by wire system".
If the motor can't get air, it won't run up in rpm.
A change in fuel ratio won't have this effect until there is almost no fuel, then the engine quits running.
Ignition will also stop the engine, not just limit it's rpm.
If you had a tuner with monitor functions, this could be seen in the mass air numbers that dial up as you press the pedal..

If you ran it that fast in 4x4 low, you probably messed something up. Why were you trying to pass a car in 4x4 low?

If you re-read his post you will see that he didn't try to pass a car in 4LO. It was after the failsafe shut off that he tried to pass a car and no-go! I am wondering if you messed up something in the T-case or trans. There is a lot of torque applied in 4 lo and if everything wasn't engaged properly I would assume that you could do some serious damage. Did you get a CEL? Have you tried to re-set the computer. It could have thrown a code that is stored in the PCM and this could be causing your problem. The PCM might be shutting the gas or the ignition off to prevent damage.
