4.9L I-6 or 4.0L V6

I'd say the 4.9L, the 4.0L is underpowered in my opinion, never impressed me with my Explorer.

The 4.9L, no matter how you mean "bigger".

4.0= 160 HP and 225 ft-lbs TQ

4.9= 150-170 HP (depending on year) and 265 ft-lbs TQ

HI!... Actually 4.0L (SOHC) = 207H.P/ 238FT/LBS of TQ.
