Yes, it can damage the compressor, but no, you don't have to get it towed. Just unplug the compressor clutch so it doesn't try to engage.

The friction of a grinding clutch can generate enough heat to cook the compressor seal, and even set it on fire, but that's an EXTREME case and you'd have to let it grind for an hour or more continuously.

So you weren't sure about the clutch??? You need to DIAGNOSE the problem before you buy parts. Find out what the noise is; THEN you can choose how best to fix it.

Is it grinding when the clutch is DISengaged (A/C off)? If so, remove the belt & spin the compressor pulley by hand. Then try the alternator, water pump, & each of the idler/tensioner pullies. The P/S & smog (if equipped) pumps won't spin freely. When you find the source of the noise, post it here.

the source of the noise is the compressor, or the clutch. i only replaced the clutch cover. my question is would it be the clutch that makes the noise or the compressor? i still have air cold and with the a/c on and off it still makes noise. at idle mostly. it sounds like metal on metal or bearings. i really need a break down on the set up from the compressor to the clutch plate for the 2000 f-150 with every part in the assembly.
