thermostat: Spring towards engine?

I didnt notice when I took it out and by the time I got back to it I forgot.
Anyone help me out quick?
It is a 4.2

I put it in spring first and filled the antifreeze back up but the top hose is still squishy. I dont know if it is supposed to be or not cause I didnt think to feel it before hand.

Thanks for a quick response.

thermostat ?

the thermostat spring goes down in the manifold, as far as the hose.. is it old?? might as well spend the few extra bucks for a new one. one less thing to worry about later. they always blow at the worse time

hose is not too old the truck is a 98 and has 90000 miles on it. I was just saying and the squishy hose is that I thought I would feel water in it?

ok,complelely drain the radiator, close it up, fill ot up halfway with 50/50 antifreeze, then turn the truck on slowly fill it up all the way, turn on the heat ,watch the temp gauge.careful not to overfill, dont want to have any air in the system. that can cause a collapsed hose, after about 5 minutes hose should be warm. let it idle for about 10 minutes, if the temp stays on normal range and the heat is working well you should be all set. good luck

In addition, take it for a short drive and check the coolant level afterwords. There's usually a couple burps left.
