Oil Pressure Light
Oil Pressure Light
Hi Guys,
I have a 2002 F150 w/4.6. Yesterday while riding home my oil pressure guage went to zero and the oil light came on. I stopped and checked all my fluids and everything was fine. I re started and everything was fine. Today, the guage went to zero a couple of times, but immediately came right back up. Is this a sensor problem, or do I have a serious problem?

Located behind the oil filter on it's adapter.
It has a locking connector.
Hard to get at.
Move it around a bit to see if it is just a dirty connection. If not then it needs changing. All it is is a switch that closes at about 6 psi. The dash gauge in not telling you anything but that the switch did or did not close.

Hundreds of oil pressure switches will fail for every pump that fails.
If in doubt, connect a guage.

oil filter?
Something to keep in the back of you mind is the oil filter has plugged or failed. I had this happen once on an old Ford car(1967). Before everybody jumps in and says the oil filter has a bypass valve. How failsafe can a 3 or 4 dollar oil filter be?

this is where troubleshooting comes in handly you do the basic first then work your way up mechianics do the same of couse as u did check fuilds, then do a oil change/filter , ok then considure a senser failure and replace if still bad look into oil pump no reason to go out a buy a oil pump when it could be something simple

any updat on the oil pressure situation?
Wanna bet? A mechanic will throw a new sender on there first since it takes the same amount of time to replace as it does to attach a guage. If the light goes off when the sender is replaced, he's done.
For the mechanic, it's not about doing it right, it's about getting it done in the least possible time.
