99 Epedition 4.6 engine removal

Hey guys, Obviously by my user name gassers aren't my thing. I have a friend that blew the motor up in his expedition and he bought a long block. I am about to start the job but have a question.

Does the intake have to come off to pull the motor?

I am using the cheery picker method since my garage only has a 9 ft ceiling.

any other tips, tricks that may help?

thanks,
Brent.

Yes, and take the hood off too.

Yes, you have to remove the intake to access the top bellhousing bolts.

Mine seemed easy enough by unbolting the motor mount pads from the frame, rather then seperating the mounts from the pads.

Well the motor is sitting on the floor next to the long block...It went pretty smoth so far and hope to get the new motor back in some night this week. I pulled the pan in the tare down and found some aluminum shavings in the pan...But no metal. I didn't here the motor running but it was explained to me that it sounded like a hammer pounding on a piece of sheetmetal while running. I pulled the heads to see if there was contact between the pistons and valves and found nothing...I havn't pulled any main caps or connecting rod caps yet to check them out but I'm a little surprised to find nothing bad yet.
The cam shafts caps had some pretty large scores in them though.

We will check further into what actually failed I guess after the install is done.

Thanks for the tips
Brent.

A machine shop can turn the cams for you. In fact, while you have it apart, having that done (and new bearings), a valve job, and new guides and seals wouldn't be a bad idea.
