bad fuel pump???

Was out running errands tonight and stopped in at BP for some Drinks. Came out and the truck wouldn't start. Would turn over, but wouldn't fire. Called AAA. he took off the K&N and held a gas soaked rag up to the TB. Fired right up. Moved the rag and it died. I had the fule filter replaced on my last oil change about 500 miles ago. He said it was an old trick and it is the fuel pump. What do you guys think? Towed it to the shop. If it is, what is a ballpark for replacement?

not too bad if you like doin your own work... best way to change it is unbolt the bed 4 bolts.. slide it back bout 2 feet till you see the round threaded part with hoses coming out easiest way to change it out with out dropping the tank.. a new one rund bout 130- 160 at your autozone or other autopart store... if you replace get a new one dont buy no remanufactured crap... you'll be doin this again .soon if you do..

Just replaced mine on my 01 supercrew.

Well, mine did the same thing I took my truck bed of only because I had the bolts already out. Once I did that I had to disconect 2 rubber hoses , electrical connection, then fitted fuel lines with one of those special fuel line disconetor tools(about 12 bucks). Then removed all the gas out of the tank then, dropped the tank and removed the fuel pump and replace it with a new one from napa auto parts for about $111(including tax). Now getting the new one back in and lines fuel lines was easy but getting those nutty bolts back on for the supporting brackets was a pain, but do able. Once I got the new one back in and everything checked out She fire right up. Even put in a new fuel filter while I was doing that. It was not a snap and did take a little work but now that its running fine again, worth it. What started my problem with my fuel pump was I let it run to long on "Low Fuel" and the strianer at the bottom of the pum came off and cloged up the pump. There are several threads on this site where people reported running it to long on "low fuel" and then having fuel pump problems. One staited the gas lubricates the pump, not sure about that but.. then again I'm not a mechanic just someone who likes to try things. Good luck if you do it and keep us posted. Oh forgot to mention mine cranked just fine but would not catch and I try starting flued and it would fire but not stay on.

It was the fuel pump. They are replacing it, the screen , and the fuel filter. Didn't have the time to do it myself. Gonna run me about $575. But I guess not too bad as it's the first major repair I've had, that was non mantainence.

Fuel filter replacement is a maintenance item. Ford specifies every 30k miles. Modified vehicles with greater fuel demands should go 15k.

gasoline cools the fuel pump

The main reason for not running too low on gas is because the gas cools the fuel pump. I have read not to run the tank below one-fourth full. I have always followed that rule and have never had a fuel pump problem in a fuel injected vehicle. Some over 200,000 miles.(knock on wood) Just my 2 cents.
