engine stalls when accelator is pressed when cold
engine stalls when accelator is pressed when cold
I bought this 87 f150, auto tran, ps, pb, 4.9l, 6 cyl from a friend. It has not been driven much in the last couple of years. It runs pretty well.
I have changed, plugs, wires, dist cap & rotor, tps, o2 sensor, vss, cleaned the throttle body intake, cleaned the iac, replace the vacuum cannister, air filter, oil filter, oil, all the brakes, the brake vacuum booster.
I have improved a number of things, but, what still haunts me is this stalling. When the engine is cold, and I start to depress the accerator, the engine wants to stall, and will unless you feather (pump) the accelerator. Then the engine pics up, and you are off to the races, (ie, it picks up speed a bit too fast for my development driving). Now this will continue until the engine is completely warmed up, and as it warms, the problem slowly diminishes.
I have disconnected the iac while it is idleing, and there is a change in the engine idle, so that appears to be good. Not sure about how the egr or the map sensor plays into all the cold engine performance, maybe someone can help me there. Any ideas? I'll try just about anything, provided it doesn't cost a bundle. Have a great day. The link is for the vacuum diagram, 87 f150.

A sticking automatic choke? If it's an 80's vintage auto, it's bound to have one.
Check all your carby linkages - spray with lithium grease - and have you tuned it? It's probably related to the slow-running settings, too.
OK, I'm assuming it's carburetted. If it's injected, disregard but do check what linkages there are, and any parts that are temp-related.
