Need for custom Spark Plug tool on 5.4L

In the past I have always used a standard spark plug socket with an extension when changing the plugs in my 01 5.4L. Recently I have heard that using a standard spark plug socket with an extension can prevent proper seating of the spark plugs. I believe there is a special socket with built in extension for sale. Is this custom socket needed? If so, where to buy?

No special socket for the 01. Just a regular spark plug socket.

A good idea may be to get an extension with a pin rather than a ball at the end so the socket can't come off unless the pin is pushed in, that's as fancy of tool is all you need. But you yourself know what happens at plugs 7 and 8 with 2-3 u joints and small extensions etc.? Still not bad job.

I have an extension with the spark plug socket glued on using RTV. It keeps you from leaving the socket down in the hole. Works great.

I have used clear packing tape to hold the socket to the extension in the past. But I like the RTV solution

HI!... Just spray a small amount of WD-40 inside the spark plug socket. It gets the rubber inside lubed up slightly and the socket will never stick. To change my plugs on my 5.4 all I use is 3 tools.

1 - 3/8 RACHET
2 - 3/8, 6 INCH LONG EXTENSION
3 - 3/8, 3 INCH LONG EXTENSION

Thats it.

Snap-On makes a six inch socket for these plugs. It is about sixty five dollars. I have also seen them at Harbor Freight for much less!!!

I got the snap on 6" socket on EBAY for less than $30. There are many off brand sockets like it..
