Engine "ticking"
Engine "ticking"
Well, my '98 F-150 started making a "ticking" noise some time ago, and I am now up to 155K miles. So, what do I do?
Step 1: I popped the hood at night, and looked for any signs of arcing around the plugs. Thought maybe it was a loose plug. Saw nothing.
Step 2: Checked the exhaust for any leaks. No leaks found...now I am scared.
Step 3: Assume it was a loose rod getting ready to throw....and say oh well. I will just let it go out.
Knowing the cost to fix the engine...I figured I would just limit the mileage so I would not get stranded. Recently, my job required some travel. So....
Step 4: Take truck to a Ford dealership to tell me I need to do some major repairs, or get a new truck.
$115 dollars, and 1 hour later, all is well. It was a freakin' loose spark plug (the #1, you know, the hard one to get to in the very back). Ticking has stopped, and I am good to go.
Moral of the story: Never drink a case of beer when tuning up your vehicle. You tend to overlook things apparently.
