Need new battery 99 F150 5.4 4+4 what do yuo guys use

 

In my 99, I just replaced the original with a 40 dollar Autozone battery. I'm selling the truck in 6 months, but heck, I could probably get a good solid 3 yrs out of a cheapo. Just my thoughts.

 

Optima sealed batteries are arguably the best batteries out on the market, but also the most expensive. They come in 3 flavors: Yellow, Blue, and Red. I think that's the order of "duty" levels. Yellow is kinda all-purpose, Blue is for deep cycle or marine motors, and Red is heavy-duty. They'll last you easily 4-5 years, I think they come with a 3 year free replacement guarantee. You'll want at least a 900 CCA battery for proper performance. Don't go with cheapo batteries, they lack vibration resistance and tend to crack under extreme conditions. Since your truck's a paperweight with a dead battery, I wouldn't skimp out. Save $30, or deal with problems later.

When I replaced the battery in my v8 Cherokee(I think it's a 5.3) the stock replacement was a 1000CCA battery, even though I thought that was a little overkill. I think it was a Duralast Gold or something, it was Autozone's best brand.

Where do they sell them and how much the optima red? are they better then the motorcraft.

 

Cheapest I found them was at Costco, but Advance sells them. Where in MO are you at?

The fleet runs the wallyworld 1000 amp everstart's no problem.

Exide has a line of gell cell batteries (Orbital Series) that actually have tested better than Optimas, and are a few bucks cheaper. It took some convincing, but I eventually bought one about a year ago, and absolutely love it.

 

Red = Starting
Yellow = Deep Cycle
Blue = Marine

You should run a red top. If you have heavy loads, such as a winch, then you would want a yellow.

 

Whatever, either red or yellow should be fine. If your total possible combined amp draw(EVERYTHING in your truck on) exceeds your alternator rating, even on rare occassion, get a heavy duty or deep cycle. So if you have lots of aftermarket lights or a powerful stereo or the like, get the heavy duty.

I would stay away from the walmart "neverstart" batteries. Every experience I've had with them has been bad. Bought one for my dune buggy, and it just kept going dead, it wouldn't hold a charge within about 2 weeks from purchase. Went to the junkyard and got a "new" one for $10 and it was fine. Wal-mart refused to refund or replace it either, saying that using it in an offroad application voided the warranty or something. BS, but I just didn't care enough to argue over a $30 battery.
One of my neighbors used a wal-mart battery in his WaveRunner one year, it was even specified as a "powersports" battery. Within a week one of the plates shattered(you could hear it rattle if you shook it) and left him stranded out on the lake.
I've also jumped two cars running neverstart batteries, I'd pay a little more and get a good one.

 

I don't think you need to go Optima personally, especially $$$ factor because stock is fine 90% of the time and the battery is hardly seen, or mine is and will be because of this:



So going stock or Interstate etc will do the trick, mines dying and will be doing just that. The 64 I'm building will get an Optima Red though.
