4.6 or 5.4
4.6 or 5.4
My 97 4.6 has decided to retire. Planning on putting a new engine in, but was wondering does the 5.4 fit without any major problems and what kind of price difference might I be looking at. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Yes, it will "fit." There are a number of other things that need to be changed though. Just do a search in this forum and you'll see. If you're handy, it can be done. If you're not, wel ...
personal i believe the 4.6 is less problemanic engine under powered though its seems on this site that 5.4 has a bad problem blowing out sparkplugs where it is rare or the 4.6 aluminum heads you got to hate them
dont take my word for it if you choose to update your motor look it over good and if they can run it watch for clicking seams to be a tell tell side of coil packs or plug blow outs. now i never owned or drivin a 5.4 what have told you is stuff i seen on this board month

it is true that the 4.6 is less problematic just because of pure design.. and doesnt have the long stroke so there is less bearing wear and piston slap. also it rev's more freely and with less crank/rod stress. so the 4.6l takes more abuse.. neal proved that when he tore his engine down and showed all the wear on the piston skirts from his abuse. but depending on your application depends on what motor u need. 4.6 makes a higher hp to torque ratio but because the 5.4 is a stroked 4.6 nothing more it has a better torque to hp ratio. making it better for towing.
