smells like coolant in vents
smells like coolant in vents
About a month ago, I started gettng an awful smell coming from my a/c vents. I first thought of the old "fish in the car" joke, but that wasnt it. Then I thought the smell was sort of like freon/r134 and I recharged my a/c. That didnt help either. I had a buddy tell me that it smelled like coolant and he is right. I dont know where it is coming from, but my vents sometimes "fog" when I am not using them and the smell gets stronger when I am driving. A/C and heat cause the smell. What could be causing this and how do I fix it. My coolant level is not low and I have no visible leaks. It is getting so bad that I smell like it when I have been driving for a while. Air fresheners dont even mask the smell at all. Please help....the heater is becoming neccessary in the morning.

Heater core is leaking. Fix is to replace it. It's buried in the dash, so not a fun job. Lots of posts on the process. Search for 'heater core' and you should find tons of info.
Good luck!

same thing happened to me except that it burst and a lot of coolant spilled into my passenger side of my bronco floor board. but since i live in fla, i never fixed it because i never really needed heat. but its def. a project to have done.

Ever notice the two lines coming off the water pump going into the cab? Yep, either a connection in the cab rotted or the core itself is leaking(more likely). It's almost a job to take to the shop, just to avoid the massive amount of frustration trying to get to the damn thing. I'd rather pay more to get someone else to do that than save a little and do it myself.
In the meantime, turn off the blower and get one of those cigarette-lighter heaters. Some actually throw a good amount of heat and can warm up a single cab within a minute or so.
