1999 F-150 running issues

i have a 1999 F-150 XLT Lariat 4x4. the past week i have been experiencing problems with it.

it runs fine in the morning, get to the office and when i come back out a couple of hours later, it will crank but will not stay running. usually after a couple of more hours it will crank and run fine. after a day of not being able to keep it running i changed the fuel filter on it, worked fine for a day, then started all overagain. i had it towed to a shop and they said they could find nothing wrong with it (although i dont think they did much) because they said it cranked up and ran fine for them the entire two days they had it. so basically, sometimes it cranks and runs fine, and other times it cranks but will not stay running.

does anyone have any ideas on what it could be or where i should start looking? if i cant get it to reproduce the cutting off at a mechanic they said they cant do anything for me.

You could start by cleaning the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Looks like a silver roll of quarters on the side of the throttle body.
