I have an 02 Harley. Currently all I have on it is a cold air intake and cat back exhaust. I'm planning to buy a stage II cam from Comp Cams. They say the cam requires 3.55+ gears and a 2000+ stall converter. Now I believe stock gearing on a Harley is 3.73 so i think thats ok, I wanted to know about the converter though. Is it really necessary? What exactly would a different converter do for performance? Do they require any programming or are they basically bolt on/in?

 

The reason for the gears and the stall is because down low, the cams will hurt you, but not enough in my opinion to spend the money on a stall if its an every day driver. With those cams, you really should get a custom tune done, if not, you will get stalling, and not the power you could, as if you had a tune.

 

Custom tuning is a must with the cams. With your mods, a tuner is the next best step, and you might look at a milder cam with more low end torque. Your stock stall is 1600, so the 2000 is not drastic, and could be tunable. A good aftermarket TC like the Precision Industries runs $ 1000, but is more efficient, and locks up much harder.

 

Thanks guys, I got one more question. If i were to buy a 2800 stall converter would that be better or worse. After the stage II cam, i'm buying either stage 2 or 3 heads, and I'm raising the boost to about 12-13 psi. now of course all of this will be tuned, but I was wondering whether the 2800 stall converter would be ok for that setup, or should I just keep it about 2000 stall?
