emissions

Whats up everyone? Ok I never had to get an emissions test, and I just moved to a county that requires it. I have a 97 with the 4.6(140,000miles)and was just wondering if there is something I could or should do to make sure it passes(im kinda paranoid about it) Theres probably nothing to worry about but I dont know with all these dang sensors and stuff, if they are not workin right can they make your truck fail? I just recently cleaned the IAC and EGR valves(cleaned the port from the EGR also), the MAF sensor, put in a new pcv valve, a new fuel filter and ran some LUCAS through the tank. So am I just bein paranoid ? Thanks

I would recommend running some injector cleaner, or FP60 through a couple of tanks of fuel.

The only thing most jurisdictions now check are:

1) Gas cap for proper vent/no leak operation.

2) CEL/MIL/SES. If the CEL is off and has been off for some time, you should pass with no problems. If you have a CEL and have recently reset the computer (or disconnected the battery for any reason), yyou will not pass until the computer has run all its self-tests and passed.

No more treadmill or sniffer tests for your truck in most locations.

In other words, if your check engine light is not on and has not been on, you're likely to sail right through.

thanks

thanks steve...my CEL only came on once since I have had the truck, I had to put a new egr sensor or whatever its called on and it hasnt been on ever since for any other reason, that was like 2 yrs ago. I have disconnected my battery a few times last week to clean the parts I listed above. it runs great other than a slight rough idle which i cannot seem to get to go away. i also have never changed plugs and wires, do you think that could be the cause of the rough idle and or it failing emissions. thanks again

That's interesting to know.
No emissions testing in MS, but when we lived in East Houston about 6 years ago they did the sniff testing.
I wonder why they don't do it much now? Do they trust our PCMs that much?

roscoe,
what county do you live in?
In Bucks, Philiadelphia and some other counties they do the IM 240 testing on a roller setup because those areas are tough to bring into federal air complience.
I live 50 miles north of Phila. and only get the gas cap and PCM check.
All vehichles below 95 only get the gas cap check.
If you go to the Pa. D.O.T. site and drill, you will find all the info you need to know about it.
You need to get passed before a mechanical inspection will be done.
Good luck.

Yes. In fact, here in St Louis, it is the only testing now permitted under EPA mandate for all OBD-II vehicles for the immediate area. Outlying areas still use an exhaust gas analyzer.

For more information see http://www.epa.gov/obd/veh_own.htm If you are in a testing area, consult your state's appropriate department for specifics on your area. There are still some variations in testing between the various states and even within individual states.
