forum for Ford Ranger pickups?

A friend of mine is working on a Ranger 2wd. He can only get it started with a shot of carb cleaner (when the engine is cold). It will run, but spews black smoke. Fuel pressure is good, every thing looks ok at the fuel line. It just will not start on a cold engine.

He asked me to try and hunt down some info on the web (he knows I've done a lot of research here on my 03 Expy and he's seen my TP tunes and AF1 intake!).

Anyhow, I know this is not a "Ranger" forum per se. But if there is one out there, or if anyone has some thoughts about this problem, I and my friend would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks,

John

The cold start strategy on these engine is the same as a v8.
When the key is turned on, the ECT and ACT values tells the computer it is to be a cold start so the timing is adjusted, the fuel is richened and the idle speed is raised on a timer until the ox sensor heats and begins to take control of the fuel.
There could be a problem with the ECT,ACT or their plugs/wireing to add to it.
Checking the ACT and ECT is a simple compairson.
Both are the same except packaged differently for there respective applications and will resistance test nearly the same at the same temps..
The MAP lacking vacuum or defective will run the motor very rich after startup.
This engine is Speed Density assuming it is 93 or earlier 4 or 6 and not a CA. truck.
