Ah, I see where I screwed up. The new 3v version of the 4.6 (rated at either 281hp, or 292hp, depending on where you read) is not yet available in the f150, only in the explorer. Go figure.

I stand corrected,

Lol, yup. I figured you were thinking of the 3valve. Thats confused more than a few people

stxx123, the NonPI 5.4's, which your truck has, has 235 HP, Im not sure on tq numbers though. I believe somewhere in the 290-330 range??

According to Wikipedia the 4.6L 3V in the Mustangs are underrated:

"The base Mustang uses a 210 hp (156 kW) Ford Cologne V6 engine. The GT has a 300 hp (224 kW) 4.6 L 3-valve Modular V8 with variable valve timing. Both motors seem to be underrated. Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords recently dynoed a V6 automatic at 182 rwhp, which is about 235 hp at the flywheel. 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords recently dynoed a new GT to 287 rwhp and 305 rwtq. Thats about 340 horsepower and around 360 lb.ft of torque at the flywheel, and is enough to propel the new GT's through the 1/4 mile in the lower 13-second bracket with some good shifting."

Thanks Bartak1, wow, only 235? Anything you can suggest to do to get the numbers up? I am currently saving for a 4" lift, some 33" tires, and a cat back exhaust.
Is a Lightning motor a doable swap in these trucks? Damn that Dodge Hemi !!!!!!!! LOL

There are tons of things, the most common are: intake, custom tune, exhaust, underdrive pulleys, and efans. Check out Troyerperformance.com, mainly for the tune, but you can get all of these parts from them-they know what they are doing...

Yes, you can swap in a Lightning motor; an easier and less expensive option would be to just stick a blower off an L onto your engine. Mad Enterprise makes a kit with everything you need to install one, minus the blower assembly.
You could also put on a set of P.I. (performance improved) heads. These are the heads that the 5.4 got in 1999, and are what made the HP jump from 235 to 260. If you do that, you will have to run premium gas due to the higher compression, and you would not be able to run a blower of any kind due to that. You COULD put in the dished out pistons from the PI headed motors which would get your compression back down, and allow you to run 87 octane, or add a blower later on. But you'd have to pull the motor out, and while your doing that, you might as well just rebuild the whole motor and make it haul ****.......when you start with one thing you just cant stop

Seems to have more power?? Why then is it so SLOW, and SLUGISH with the F150 setup??? Does the truck REALLY weigh that much more than the other cars? Or is it as simple as gearing?

My thought was this.... No doubt the trucks are heavy, 3.55 gears probably arent the best choice for the Truck. I also figure that the tuning with the PCM's must be a little different as well, and possible different TB's, MAFS, and such. I guess what Im really getting at here is why cant the same power from a GT, or Crown Vic, be used in the F150?

This is just somthing I have been pondering over, and thought it may make for a descent topic, with some interestig post.

Thanks

I Have a 06 stx 4x4 4.6l f150 and mine came stock with 3.73 gears. My truck doesn't feel much slower than the 5.4. My dad has a 2001 lariat 5.4 and i drive both and u can barely tell a differance except mine rides nicer

Detonation. High compression ratios plus forced induction can cause bad detonation.

I feel slighted here, I just had my 04 SCab 4.6 on the dyno, with my air raid, jba headers and 3 inch exhaust and I was 199 to the wheels. How are guys getting 231+ out of these without a blower?
