Last year I started a thread about a problem I had. My truck wouldn't coast when I let off the gas. It would slow down quickly almost like I was hitting the brakes, RPMs would drop erratically down to 500 and my gas mileage was way off. I spent a year and many hours and dollars trying to figure out what was wrong. It went to the dealer twice, a good mechanic twice, a tranny shop twice, and posted here. Nobody could figure out what was wrong. I checked the fuel system, egr system, vaccum leaks, replaced many sensors on the egr, 02's, mass air flow, OSS on the tranny, PVC, replaced plugs, DPFE, checked for dragging brakes, cleaned the TB (ports were clogged), TPS, IAC (cleaned first, then replaced), seafoamed it and even moved wires from AC condenser. Nothing worked. After hearing all I did, one mechanic said I probably had a "wierd electrical problem", another said "you need to reflash the PCM".
Finally I decided to install a set of Troyer Efans I bought a year ago and guess what? My problem is completely solved! It coasts beautifully, the RPM's hold steady and my gas mileage is back up.
I think the problem was with the mechanical fan. If I hold it in one hand and spin it, it spins smoothly about 3/4 of a turn then hits a tight spot where it becomes hard to spin. In general it doesn't seem to spin easily. Is this normal? For now my problem is solved. I love the Efans. They were a PITA to install but well worth it. The added HP and throttle response is definitely noticeable. My truck is fun to drive again.

I have been seriously considering adding the Efans too my 5.4 Screw. Mostly for the purported mileage gains, but also because I hate how the clutch fans sounds. But I am not excited about the $300+ price tag or 5 + hour install. If I could have gotten in on the Juneses $220.00 group buy, I would have done it. Hopefully they will have another group buy sometime soon.

Go with the jusnes modified dual 14" fans, They are so much cheaper than those, and just as good. Ive been running them for about 6 months and they are nice.
Is that the efan kit that was going for $220 on the group buy, or a different setup altogether??
One thing I really liked about the Troyer kit is the complete instruction booklet. I couldn't have done it without it. I'm not sure how good the instructions are with the other kits, but Troyers are pretty good. Although there were a couple of items missing, like where to attach the passenger side ground wire. There's a good description of where to attach the driver side fan ground wire, but not the passenger side. I ended up calling Troyer and they suggested using the battery terminal. They have good customer support if you have trouble with the install. Also my wires were different colors than what he described. It took some time to find the ignition source and the AC on wires. I ended up turning the AC on and pulling the fuses until it went off to find the correct corresponding wire. No matter what kit you get they are worth it. It's the second best mod (after the chip) I've done.
I would go to the junk yard and pick up a dual fan set up out of a late model pontiac grand prix, its a dual fan set up, and is exactly a perfect fit on our radiators. All I had to do is buy the fan and then a e-fan install kit from schucks for about $45, I ended up spending about $160 on the whole set up, and it keeps the engine more than cool!
I like the sounds of that! Less than $200 sounds great! What year truck do you have that you say it's a direct fit? Mine's a '99. Really hoping that it will fit into my truck as well as I know a good scrapyard that'll most likely give me a good deal on the said parts. Thanks for the suggestion.--DIY

That rpm drop on a coast happened to me once... then never again.... not sure why. I actually liked it - felt like a standard tranny

My problem was pretty consistent, always there every time I let off the gas.
A tranny guy told me it was normal engine braking but I knew it wasn't normal for this truck. It was kinda cool on long downhills with lots of traffic, I didn't have to ride the brakes. Gas mileage suffered too much though.
It seems like it's fixed now. It hasn't happend once since I installed the fans and it's been 3 weeks.
