Tc P0402
Tc P0402
After a couple of weeks of running rough, missing, hesitation, speculation and, I finally got this trouble code (P0402). At the local Autozone, it was defined as "excessive egr flow".
The truck( F150-XLT Sportsmans edition V-6 MT 2WD) has 75,000 miles on it so I had already pruchased new plugs and wires but hadn't gotten around to installing them yet.
Of course the first thing I did was get to F-150 online to search what others had done to solve this issue. Some had mentioned that the emissions system was warranted for 8 years or 80,000 miles. I checked the owners manual and sure enough my vehicle had this warranty. I was still relunctant to go to the dealer for the obvious reason, the dealers around Tampa will lie, then steal. I figured a phone call couldn't hurt, so I called three dealers. My question to all three was the same..."Is the DPFE sensor included in this warranty" Two said that the only devices covered by this warranty was the computer and the cat converter, another said that he would not know if it was covered until we put the part number in the computer and Ford would tell them if it was covered. He said I would have to roll the dice and bring the truck in.
I decide to get the after market device (DPfE) from Autozone for 36 dollars and change it. This device is manufactured by Wells and has no waranty.
Changing this DPFE requires no tools and if it takes 5 minutes, you stopped and took a coffe break. Of course Ford dealers in my area charge 57.00$ for the part and 2 hours labor at 75.00$ per hour.
During the trouble shooting process, before the trouble code came up, I pulled the#4 plug and could see imediatly that there was some fouling, I checked the gap and it was .071. I also noticed that this plug wire had an inner or double boot that coverd the spark plug connection. When I pulled the other 5 plugs they had the proper gap and the wires had standard connections at the plugs and cap. This scenario really puzzles me. I can't see how it was an accident and would like to understand why the manufacturer incorprated this into the ignition system design
The truck is running like it did when it was new. My gas mileage varies from 19-21 miles per gallon.

Scott,
Thanks for the report on your sucessful repair.
The first two dealers were correct in their warranty coverage assesment.
Haven't previously heard about the interesting #4 plugwire before....
