2000 F150 4x4 4.6 buzz/whine on acceleration

This noise has me stumped. Once I have driven maybe 1 or 2 minutes I get a loud buzzing/whining noise on acceleration. I cannot hear it at idle or cruise but it appears as I accelerate and gets louder the harder I accelerate. It sounds like the power steering pump is low, but it is topped off. A/C being off does not effect it any. I WD-40'd the idler pulley thinking the bearing may be going with no effect. New serpantine belt and alternator as of about 3 months ago. Problem started about a month or so ago.

Also, may not have anything to do with it, but the ATF appears to be over-full and bubbly and smells burnt. I plan to service that this weekend.

Any thoughts???

Thanks,
Mark

PS: my first post so please be gentle!

Welcome!!! You might find it beneficial to also use the search tool to help you find answers. Many of your questions have been answered to death in the forums. To get you started though, where exactly does the noise seem to be coming from, engine or possibly in the drive drain? I had a similar whine problem in my 2000 5.4, turned out to be the pinion bearings in the rear dif. It happened when the truck was accelerating/under load at about 40-55 MPH. If it sounds like it is coming from the engine, the IAC could be dirty and need to be cleaned/replaced. Some more specifics will be helpful.

I did do a search with no credible results . . . It seems to be coming from up front. I just replaced the air filter this morning with no good results. Was going to have the wife throttle it hard while also braking and in drive to recreate the noise, but not sure about turning my life insurance over to her quite yet. It will only make that noise under load, not while in park or neutral. By IAF did you mean air filter? Can't think of anythong more to add . . . This does it at any acceleration; from 5 mph to 65 mph . . . At first I thought it was the CV joints, boots were torn and they were rattling around, so I replaced those along with shocks and front pads. Steering while accelerating also does not effect it.

OK, did more searching and found some discussions on the IAC making a buzzing sound. I am idling good which makes me skeptical about this being my problem, but I will give it a shot. Maybe I will even get over 11 mpg!!! Will post my results later on the weekend . . .

No problem, let me know how it goes, haven't had a problem with mine yet, but from the talk on the forum it seems to be beneficial to take care of it either way!

Replaced IAC and air filter and still making same noise. Noise is consistant with engine RPM and load; when accelerating or at higher RPM it is louder. OK, now I am really stumped!

Any thoughts???
