Disturbing sound, what is it?

Twice now this has happened to me. The first time I was driving my truck at about 25mph, air on, radio on, leaving the post office, going home, about a 3 minute drive. My truck was brand new with less than 500 miles on it...about 390 if I recall. I heard a very bizzare noise, like something got caught in the wheels or brakes, like I was dragging a chain link fence. The sound lasted about 10 seconds, then stopped on its own.

It happend again last evening. Now the truck has 17400 miles on it. Driving about 45mph coming home from Lowes. This time it was a bit louder, same type of sound though. I pulled off the road and stopped. It lasted about 15 seconds this time. And was still noisy even after I stopped.

So, the noise didn't seem to have anything to do with the motion of the truck. It still made the noise after I stopped, but only for another second. The truck still drove very smooth, and gears shifted fine. It did not affect the driving whatsoever. Both times the AC was on fwiw.

I took it to the dealer this morning and the guy I've been working with there said he's heard of this complaint before but it's been a long time. The diagnostics computer usually comes up ZERO on this one he said.

The sound does NOT sound good. All gauges looked fine. Odd that it's been 1 year since it happened the first time, with all of these miles and no other occurances.

Got a call from the dealer, they couldn't reproduce the sound, but I already told them that it was unlikely since it's only happened a total of about 25 seconds in a year and 17400 miles.

Full check up produced nothing.

Can you tell where the sound was coming from? Like you said, the fact it has only occurred twice makes it hard to diagnose...

No. But it certainly sounds like it is low under the hood. I can also feel it in the gas pedal, but I don't think that has much to do with it since I could also feel it if I really was dragging something.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the AC.

My prediciton is that this is one of those things that is 'breaking' but can never be duplicated at the dealer, then all of a sudden, it will break. Glad I bought a 100K/5 year warranty from Warranty Direct. Plus, the dealer gave a 75K mile/4 year warranty on powertrain.
