New plug wires make a difference?

I was wondering if on a truck with about 100,000 miles on it would benefit from new plug wires. I inspected the tips of the wires that go down into the spark plug holes and they look rusty, along with the metal contact points. Please let me know what you think.

MSD wires made a signifigant difference on my truck they are only about 100 bucks new for a set for the F150's
but the taylor thundervolts are good to. just be sure its lower resistance than OEM. MSD's have the lowest resistance... i got a steal on a set with 50 miles on em while back for 43 bucks

The short answer is, "YES."

The longer answer needs more infromation from you. i.e. Year and Engine.

If you have a 4.6L that is pre COP (Coil on Plugs) You should replace the Coil Packs as well. I'd suggest getting some performance Coil Packs such as Accel or the Red one that's name excapes me.

When I replaced just my Coil Packs with ones from Troyer, there was a noticable increase in power and I recorded a 1.5 MPG increase.

If you have a 5.4L or COP 4.6L then I'll have to defer that to someone else. Check with Troyer Performance, there is a wealth of information on his product pages and from my experience the claims of MPG and performance gains are accurate.

My engine is a 1997 4.6 liter. I'm not sure if it's COP. I would think that would be obvious for me to be able to see. But maybe not. It appears as though the engine has two distributors mounted alongside the valve covers and then wires leading to long rubber tubes that slide down into the plug holes and hook up to the spark plug.

That's the other one, MSD. Accel and MSD are both high output coil packs. Yes the '97 4.6 had coil packs not COPs.

I hope no one minds a plug for someone, but I got a good deal on the Ignition Upgrade Kit (Coil Packs, HP Plug Wires and Denisen Spark Plugs) at Troyer Performance.

Believe me I did look around before making the purchase. Even with a 10% military discount at some places, both online and off, I couldn't find a better price for the same level of parts and that was even taking into account the S/H costs.

Oh and that 1.5 mpg increase I mentioned, that was just with the High Performance Coil Packs. I didn't get around to installing the wires or plugs before being mobilized.

If I'd known all along that HP Coils made so much of a difference, I'd have installed them on every vehicle I've ever owned. In my opinion it's the easiest and cheapest perfomance mod you could make.

i got MSD wires for 43 bucks. accel coil packs are 2,000v higher output than the MSD's and they are 120 a pair instead of 138. and im still on double platinum plugs... im lean so im burning enough fuel as it is. but if u want a better spark go with copper plugs not irridiums. irridiums last longer but coppers is better spark and u get the best performance out of a copper plug if u are n/a.

Socal, I believe they switched from coil packs to the COPs in 01, so you should have the coilpacks/wires. Easiest way is to pop the hood and see if you have plug wires

Flow-Master, I would put new plugs and wires in at the least, and coil packs if you are up to it. If all that stuff hasnt been replaced for awhile, or ever, they could use it.

I got JBA plug wires from Troyers for 100 bucks and a set of Autolite Douple Platinum plugs from my local NAPA for around 50ish. Havent put on different coil pack, however I think they might be going to hell; the truck has started to develop a slight miss. Ill just live with it though, Im getting a different truck soon (no more wimpy 4.6 either)

I believe that is correct. The 4.6L had Coil Packs and Plug Wires until '01 when they switched to Coil on Plugs (COPs). But if you have a 5.4L you're SOL as they always were COPs.

Be forewarned Flow-Master.
I hear the plug change is not easy to do and it better be done right.
I am going to just have Ford do mine. Of course having them do it will be $166.
But I figure they got less of a chance of screwing up the infamous threads.

Faster I was speaking about the plugs themselves. But it's good to know the wires are not too much of a hassle to change.
