Your very fortunate, COP failure is more common than plug failure with these motors. However that sounds about right, general maintence suggests changing your plugs out at 60k.

I have the same problem on my 01 5.4. Seems to happen while cruising or off acceleration when goin up a hill. It stutters and it just seems like you just accelerate through it. I have about 75,000 miles on mine and I changed the fuel pump and plugs about 20,000 miles ago......any suggestions....no check engine light either

When it stutters like that again just floor it (if not in heavy traffic ) keep it pegged if you can even if it the stutter gets worse. This is the way I forced a MIL when I couldn't get one lol. When driving normal at about 45mph you'll shift into OD, when it shifts gradually bring it up to 55mph. If you have COP issues it is usually more prevalent from 45- 2- 55 as said- right after shifting into OD it's the most noticeable. Let me know what happens thanx..

my 01' 4.6 is having the same stuttering problem. it usually happens like you said when shifting out of overdrive and occasionally when accelerating from a stop. i managed to get a code a few weeks ago and it was p0304 which is number 4 misfire. the plugs were changed about 5000 miles ago and it happened before and continues to happen after. should i focus on the cop's or coil packs or what.

i dont know if its relevant or not but a few days ago i was late getting somewhere so i crakned up and pulled out in a hurry and after about 50 yards the engine died completely. i put it in park and re cranked it and it almost died again then the rpms spiked to about 2000 and then it settled out and was fine. thats the only time that has ever happened that i know of.

Some great advice for yuh - get on that ebay site and get yourself a cheap set of good COPS and replace them all (8) - Just click on my name then scroll down to all posts by jbrew and you read about My COP drama last spring. I used up personal days from work,It sucked !! don't go thru what I did - just replace them all..
That's the only time I had a serious issue with my truck - Well okay, besides a dealership oil change that didn't replace the oil after removing the old - (didn't get far lol) Ford made it right.
Almost 200k on my 5.4 now - wouldn't of got there without this site - Doesn't burn a drop of oil, compression on each cylinder is right there - GREAT motors!!
The 4.6 is basically the same, actually the 5.4 is just a stroked 4.6.
It's been a while since I been on ebay , but you use to be able to get all 8 Cop's and Motorcraft Platinums plugs as a kit for $130 - couldn't beat it and it's definitely worth the investment.

Good Luck .

ok i will try that. i am also going to put new clamps on the heater hoses right about the #4 cylinder. i dont think they are causing it cause the are dusty and have never shown any wetness at all but i am gonna do it anyway.

Sounds good , you might not want to attempt it though unless one or both are indeed leaking - U can make things worse attempting to re-clamp if the hoses are old. If you want to take that worry away - (I would - I did) Get some new one's then us e the clamps that come with them - they are a different type (huh, wonder why? lol) - I purchased mine from the dealership $38 for both - expensive , but I don't think I ever have to worry about it.

I did try to re- cut the hoses at first because they were stretched at the ends and didn't look to healthy , didn't get away with it , just sliced a 1/2- 3/4 of an inch on each side , but ended up to short for comfort , crimped a little to much at the bends for comfort , soooo, I switched them out for OEM's. I like the new style clamps - glad I did it..

Hope that helps a little

good luck!!
