P0401 Code..
My truck popped up with a ses light last night so i went by Autozone to have them read it. Came up with excessive exhaust gas EGR code, did some research on here, found out about the DPFE sensor. So, then i figured for giggles i would call the dealer. I have a 2002 F150, 4.6. I was asking to make sure since it's emissions related, it would be covered under warranty, i have 62,000 miles. He said there was actually a TSB regarding that code, and no charge to fix it. So, good for me, i take it by Monday morning. Really good since i have no money, and still need to get my truck fixed from the accident i had 2 weeks ago. Anyone want to sponsor me for 500 bucks to get my deductible covered? I will keep you guys updated (well, those who care at least) about what they find.
I just found this info on a website as well, might be of interest to some...
2000-02 Taurus/Sable; 2001-02 Crown Victoria, Focus, Mustang, E-Series, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, F-150, Ranger, Windstar, Town Car, Cougar, Grand Marquis, Mountaineer
MIL illumination with DTC P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401 and/or rough running, low power, surge and poor fuel economy all indicate problems with the DPFE sensor on the EGR system. If the vehicle has a tube-mounted DPFE sensor and one of these codes are present, the bulletin instructs to install a new sensor, P/N 2F1Z-9J460-AA.

If the DPFE don't work, take off your throttle body and clean the EGR ports. I cleaned mine a couple of days ago and they were packed plum full of carbon.
Here is the link for directions on how to do it. Good luck.

Yea, i was reading that this morning as well. Hopefully the dealer will fix it and it will just be the DPFE sensor. The whole EGR cleaning thing doesn't look like a lot of fun. But, it may be necessary, who knows.
Well, that didn't go as planned. Pulled up to the service drive to drop the truck off, the guy i talked to on the phone led me to believe my problem was a recall and completely covered... not so much. 85 bucks for diagnosis, plus whatever to fix it. I bought the extended warranty thru my credit union, and was broke the day i was supposed to drop the truck off, so i rescheduled for Wednesday, and called my warranty people. 50 bucks deductible and it's covered. Just for fun, i called the dealer for a price on the dfpe sensor, $86.11.. yikes... hopefully, tomorrow it will be taken care of.
Another update: Dealer called back, the egr ports are completely clogged... warranty will cover some stuff, not everything.. dpfe sensor is bad as well...
300 bucks out of pocket....ouch
If it weren't for bad luck, i'd have no luck at all... I should have just picked it up and did the tb cleaning myself... no time though

According to my local dealers, the only thing covered under the emissions warranty is a free PCV valve @ 60,000 miles.
Cleaning out the EGR ports only takes 20-30 minutes including removal/install of the intake elbo. Replacing the EGR valve, DPFE and vacuum sensor takes just a few minutes and I can normally get all 3 OEM parts on-line for under $125 delivered. Normally, only the DPFE goes bad, but I typically replace all 3 parts while I have the EGR valve and hoses off.

The egr valve was clogged, and the DFPE sensor was bad. My extended warranty covered a new DFPE sensor, but since i did not have the fuel injection serviced at regular intervals, the egr valve was not. It was completely clogged, both ports. They took of the throttle body, cleaned all the deposits, replaced the egr and DFPE sensor. My cost was $300.00. Still need to go back and have fuel injection service done. Hindsight, i could have done everything myself on the weekend, for a lot less, but don't think the truck would have made it another 3 days. Live and learn...
