start with cleaning the maf sensor.

Do what sparky says, and check for vacuum leaks. Bad ones will make a whistle. PCV valve hose boots are notorious for rotting off. Spray starting fluid around suspected areas if you can't reach them. Listen carefully for engine RPMs to change.
