15w40 wont hurt a thing....I have ran it in EVEYTHING I have owned for the last 15 years and never had a problem. I use it because its cheap as we buy it in bulk... 250 GAL at a time. As far as the filter arguement goes, A filter is pretty much a filter. If you maintain a regular service program you wont notice any difference between WIX and the Wal-mart special

Yeah, everybody thinks these trucks have some kind of super tight tolerance engine or something. Cut your cats off, and you'll find out really quick that the exhaust still smells like a 1985 ford. The most important thing is that you have oil, change it like you're supposed to, and you use a brand that your truck doens't burn excessively.

Went to a different Wally-mart and found plenty of 10W30 today. I grabbed a gallon of 15W40 for my 05 CRF450R too.

This store had Motorcraft filters (instead of Autolite) so I grabbbed two more of those too.

Our WalMarts sell MC filters too. I've not seen an Autolite oil filter at any of them.

I use Shell Rotella in my truck, but 10W30 is getting hard to find on store shelves lately?? I'd like to find a 5 gallon bucket of it, but so far only see 15W40 in the bucket.

Why is the Rotella getting so hard to find??

you should not use the cheap AL filters. the antidrain back valve may fail because it can not take the heat that the silicone valve does. it is real important to get oil to the overhead cams quickly upon start up. the antidrain back valves helps keep oil in the oil passages when the engine is shut off.

use 5w30 or 5w20. my 97 4.6 uses less oil when I run 5w30 vs 10w30.
this is a great site but there are lots of opinions and voodo science flying around on this site. deal with the facts

the CRF has very specific oil requirements not met by automotive motor oil.

I've been thinking of trying out the Mobil 1 filters and just needed to know which one to buy. Is it the M-107?

Thanks much - Jonathan

Yea, over 400K miles of driving on my personal vehicals and NEVER had an oil related problem. That should be all the data you need. Ive drove over 225K in the last year(work and personal combined) and not one problem. Change the oil and filter regularly and you wont have a problem

I'd suspect an oil pressure issue. Any chance oil pressure was ever checked with a gauge on an oil gallery ? Kind of late to check now.... If the level was never low and the bearings failed, why ? Faulty bearings ? I'm told the 3.4L in my '01 Impala has similar potential issues, but I don't lose sleep over it. Just check oil level and condition more often (too dark, change it). I'd take the oil pump apart and check it, there are specs in a service manual which would give you a half a clue if it's whipped or not.

As for the issue mentioned in the link about the filter not being full, I've seen this lots (I'm a truck/coach mechanic) and have never seen or heard about an engine failure because the filter wasn't full when removed. Saw one last thursday, actually, a 3126 Caterpillar engine in a 5-ton with some 800,000 miles on it. I don't lose sleep about that either.

Back to the bearing failure.... Why the rod bearings worn more than the mains, and the cams look ok ? Not a starvation issue, either an abuse issue or a pressure issue, in my opinion.

Well I'm stocked up on the old style motorcraft filters before they switch to the crappy kind. Also bought out the remaining stock of our walmarts motorcraft oil since they won't sell it anymore.

WELL, I AM, AND IF YOU ARE AN OCCASIONAL TRAIL RIDER, THEN YOU MAY GET AWAY WITH USING THAT CRAP. IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS RIDER, AND I AM GUESSING YOU ARE WITH A 450R, THEN WHY WOULD YOU PUT THAT CHEAP CRAP IN YOUR BIKE WHEN COMMON SENSE TELLS YOU IT'S NOT GOOD FOR IT?

THAT'S COOL JJM - I'LL BE HAPPY TO REBUILD YOUR CLUTCH/MOTOR WHEN YOU BRING IT BACK TO THE SHOP!! IT'S GUYS LIKE YOU WHO KEEP ME IN BUSINESS.
