Engine Check light came on.....
You really can't do a whole lot of diagnostics without knowing what those codes are. As B-man said you could take it to any local Autozone store and they will read the codes off your engine computer for free. Once you have that info, along with the make, model, year, engine, and any other pertinent info, then maybe some of the 'experts' here could help you.

DO NOT let the drone at the auto parts store try to diagnose WHAT the fault actually is. Most of them do not have the skills or training beyond punching a few buttons on a code reader.
WRITE DOWN THE CODE(S) (Pxxxx or whatever, not descriptions)
Come back here and look for previous discussions by using the codes as your keyword in the SEARCH tool. If you can't find relevent posts or need something explained further, just ask.

Good advice. Just FYI... around me, the Auto Zone dorks no longer touch your vehicle. Because of that, the code reader is no longer 'free'. It requires a $183 deposit in which you get a FULL refund when you return it. But you do the work yourself, which I like better anyways.
