Engine knocking

I own a 2002 F150 Supercrew. The motor is a 2003 and has approximately 13k miles and the trans and body has 110k miles. I have a slight knocking noise in the moter at start-up. When shifting into reverse (with brake pedal depressed) the knocking noise gets considerably louder. Shifting into nuetral, the noise quiets down but is still there. Shift into Drive, 2, 1 and the noise level goes back up. By giving the engine gas with the brake pedal still depressed and trans in gear (both Reverse and Drive) the noise goes away at app. 1200-1400 rpm range. My gut is telling bearing problems. Tell me i'm wrong...please!

Hello,

I have the same dang thing. THe old piston slap. I have only 35,000 miles on my 02 Crewcab. 5.4l engine. I have a Diablo Sport chip in it. But it still does the knocking as mentioned above. What can you do with the timing? Is there a tsb? Who would I change the timing and still use my chip. I can't stand that damn noise. Everything I read tho says nothing bad will come of it. I still want to get rid of it. Any weight oil I should be using?

could be fuel grade ur using. but the fuel, ignition timing can be tuned to remove the firing pattern that causes the piston slap.

Piston slap? What is it...How do I get rid of it? Will it cause any further damage if left alone?

Engine knock noises

My 97 started making noises at 50.000.when its cold it gets worse.
The mechanic I took it to(a couple good country boys)Says the fords have made noises like that longer than his grandfather could remember.Anyway
a valve or piston slap could be your culpret.
40 weight and 250,000 and it will still smoke a chevy anyday

I don't like the word "knock". When people say that, I get nervous. Do you mean a "tick"?

It is a knock...like someone lightly hit the enging block with a hammer. The noise is consistant with engine rpm, but fads away at about 1400 rpm When I changed the oil I couldn't find any metal in it. It was very clean. I am puzzled by the noise. Noise is worse when cold.
