2 cents a gallon probably would not be worth it, unless one is partial to that particular station - we all probably have our own favorite gas stations.

Industry standard is that the light should come on with roughly 10% of the tank capacity remaining.

That would be fairly consistent to my experience. I generally can go about 30 miles after the light comes on. 10% of 300 miles to a tank = 30 miles.

gallons after fuel light

25 gallon tank
I've gone 50 miles after fuel light and then filling up took 24.1 gallons. have done this a couple times.
so at about 16 miles to the gallon, I'd bet I could have gone to 60 miles after
the fuel light.

big old tank

My 97 F-150 with the 4.6 has a 30 gallon tank and when the gas light comes on, which I try not to have happen, I have gone 65 miles. Not something I'm proud of though. The truck took 27 1/2 gallons when I filled up but you know as well as I do that a 30gl. tank won't actually take a full 30gl.
Now keep in mind that those were 65 hwy miles, and the last 35 miles were scary as hell. Hope this helps.

Let's say you got 13mpg on your trip to the across town.... That would equate to a cost of $1.79.(if fuel is $2.60 a gallon) If gas across town was $0.09 per gallon cheaper and you put 20 gallons in your truck, then you saved $1.80.

Net savings= 1 cent.

Even if you got 20 mpg, and you saved 20 cent a gallon you're still not talking but $2.83 in savings! And you wasted 20 minutes of your day. (assuming you went 60mph through town.)

I'm not getting down on you. It's a shame that the price is so high that people can show a small savings by driving 9 miles to get a better gas price.

25 gal tank. When the light comes on, it takes just over 21 to fill it. So about 4 gal capacity. Of that, I figure I can probably safely use 2 or 2.5 gals, or 30-40 miles.

I have run my guage well below the empty line( it appears) and once i put 27 gallons in my tank....I thought I had a 26 gallon tank, and that i just used some RESERVE...and got lucky....now from all you guys have posted i just rechecked the book and sure enough the long bed i have has a 30 gallon tank.. so i bet you may have OVER 4 gallons of gas when the light comes on.....because long after that light came on and I had daylight between the empty line and my needle....I put 27 gallons in my 30 gallon tank....good to know.....now i BETTER have that 30 gallon tank....because i have never run out of gas!!!!!!!!! I have a 4x4 super cab long bed. FX4...

the mere fact the truck is a long bed, makes for the 30 gallon tank!...correct?

oh by the way after new plugs , air filter and cleaning my fuel injectors and putting two containers of fuel injector cleaner in 2 tanks of gas...i still only get 14 MPG

got 103K on my 02............thats around town type driving.....

I have a 27 gallon tank and by going off my gas mileage and trial runs , i have found that my fuel light goes on at 3 gallons, left, then 2, then 1. This is a rough estimate, but i am pretty sure it is right.

Umm, maybe it's me, 3 gallons left in a 30-gallon tank would be 10% left, which is the industry standard.

And yes, the long beds all have a 30-gallon tank.

I have a 94 so i have duel tanks. I noticed if i went to the line i only put in 13 or 14 gallons depending on which tank. So i just drove on one till it went empty and flipped to the other tank. They are supposed to be 18 and 19 in the manaul. Which is what i found to be true. I can drive for about 3 days on the line. In either tank i have about 4-5 gallons more after the needle hits the "E". I dont do that every time but its nice to know that if i ever do get in a pickle i can squeeze about 55-70 more miles out of it. depend on highway or city. yes that much. i was shocked as well.
