Is this a transmission problem?

Ok so heres how it happened.

We are riding in my buddies F150 same year as mine (2002) also a Triton 4.6 4x2 . We were hauling maybe 300 lb, and it was hot out about 88 degrees. (those details may be pointless) anyway We're on the highway and he slowly noticed he was losing power. Got to the point that whenhe would hit the gas the RPMs would go up, the engine would rev louder, but nothing else would happen. This was kind of on and off but mostly on. We discovever that he could however drive normally when in 2. We checked all the fluids and everything looked good. Hes got like 60000 miles on the truck. Any one know whats going on??

Thanks in advance!

side note...we also tried 1 and R and they seemed to work fine, also shut the truck off a few time to let it cool down and unload it but the problem remained.

transmission is always the coolest when on the highway. does urs have the tow package if so its got a tranny cooler on it. but what do u mean the rpm's would go up and nothing would happen as in rpm goes up and like the gear doesnt engage so the speed doesnt increase?

Yes the RPMS would go up but the speed wouldnt change, in fact it would slowly taper off. Hes got a King Ranch similar to mine, I have no idea if they has the tow package.

Kind of what I thought, I think you'll have to bite the bullet and go to a specialist, there's a lot of specialised gear you need to do auto transmissions and specialist knowledge....

You can always decline to have the work done, get a quote - it could be something simple, but probably not from the sounds of it.
