Coil/plug problems

Sorry for the somewhat repetitive post as I have seen some others with similar problems. I have an 01 5.4l supercrew and I have had a tough time with the coils/plugs fowling. I found out pretty quick that that the replacement is not as easy as my older truck. Every time this has happened, has been when water has splashed onto the engine. I'm not fjording rivers or anything, but I have to drive in offroad conditions 4-5 days a week. If the truck can't take a little water now and then, it is worthless to me. Is there any way to better seal the ignition system or any aftermarket system that is a little more durable?

put some dielectric grease around the boot to seal it off that usually fixes it for us dodge and GM runs in to the same problems

Don't be shy with it either and it will last - pull the boot off each cop- do the whole inside of the boot - slide it back over the spring and onto the coil - put di-electric around the top of the boot where it meets the coil. Install implace. important , what most forget - add more di-electric and seal the gap between the boot and the head. Lastly around conector after pluged in - now your safe...

You might want to pick one of these kits before they go away - the f150 kit

Thanks for the replies, I've been putting a silicon based grease on the components all along. I guess I'll have to use more. I've Had to replace 5 coils since October.

The coils for the 5.4 in the F150s are marginal at best. Make sure you are not exceeding the factory plug gap. When I replaced my plugs I actually reduced the gap by 0.005 to help the coil last. Worked for me. Just my $0.02.

It is a great deal, one thing tho - make sure the merchant knows the exact plugs you need , he got confused in my first kit and I had to swapp them out localy, luckely they did this for me, but yeah , he's a pretty good guy "steve" - talked to him personally. He said these kits come and go so if your thinkin you may be due to change these in the near future , I wouldn't wait..Grab them while there here.

coil packs on eBay

So...these kits are REAL - at that price I thought it was a scam. The local parts shop wants $79/coil pack. I am experiencing a mis-fire for the first time in my 2002 Screw (i.e., 80K) - of coarse it's just after a degreasing of the engine. BOY - that's the last time I clean my motor. I spent the last couple of nights replacing spark plugs and drying out the coil packs to no avail - I still have a misfire on cylinder #7. So...I figured it was time to replace the coil packs as I hear they have a shelf life...

These packs are the real FORD OEM parts correct? I hear there is a China made one too, I would rather spend the money and get the real thing in an effort to avoid changing them out anytime soon.

thanks
tom
