a/c compressor question

The a/c in my 97 F150 4.6 does not work. I had the pressures checked and the system evacuated and attempted to re-charge but the compressor does not work. The low pressure cycling switch is operating and I am getting power to the compressor. I tested both wires at the compressor with a test light. I am assuming that the clutch is toast and would like to know if it is a major operation to replace just the clutch or is it open heart and replace complete compressor. Also, if the clutch is replaceable on its own can I do this with the compressor in place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, the clutch, pulley, and field coil can be replaced without replacing the entire compressor. It is best to remove it from the vehicle to do so. There isn't much room and you might damage the compressor attempting to remove the field coil (it is pressed on). Also, you have to set the clutch gap. All much easier and safer on the bench. Good luck!

I believe the clutch has a constant power from the ignition switch and the ground is used to cycle the clutch on and off, a test light with the the roach clip connected the ground just shows you have power to the clutch and should only light up on one wire. if it lights up on both that means you don't have the ground (neg) to the clutch, the power is going through the coil and through your test light to ground. If it had a good ground it would not go through yor test light because of the resistance of the bulb
