check engine light does not light up when started

I have a 1997 f-150, 4.6L with 152,000 miles on it, the check engine light does not come on when the motor is started, and Ican not get it inspected, I had the heater core replaced last month and the guy replaced the bulb when he had the dash off, but it still doesn't work, can anyone help, thanks

Either the bulb installed is bad, or you have an open circuit between it and the PCM.

Time to get out the schematic and a meter...

Powertrain control modual. Main computer. It's above the parking brake pedal.

When you said "cannot get it inspected" did you mean it would not pull any codes or communicate with a scan tool??? If this is the case your pcm could be on the fritz.

hi, what I mean is that when they go to inspect the truck and they turn the key on to start it and the "check engine light " does not light up, and in turn ,it will not pass inspection,as the light must iluminate upon start up, codes show up on the scan machine that they have at auto zone, thanks
