Lessons Learned for the Electric Fan Kit from Troyer
Lessons Learned for the Electric Fan Kit from Troyer
Before you order the kit, measure your radiator across the mounting area where the fans will go. And when you order the kit from them, tell them the distance so you can get the right fans. I ordered mine from the internet without speaking to anyone and my fans were an 1 7/8 to wide. I had to cut the fan housing down for them to fit...I didnt want to wait, i had the kit for 2 months and didnt want the hassle of returning it for different fans....
I will take the hit for that one.....However the documentation said it would fit my 98 f150....
The main relay for the fans has 2 permissive relay wires. meaning that when power is on those wires the fans cut on. The ignition switch wire worked fine and was the same color as described in the book. The A/C switch wire was different...The book says it could be, Mine was Black w/green stripe.
It took me about 5 hours to get it all in and adjusted.
They asked for people not to troubleshoot on F150 Online and would rather you call them on there tech support line.....And I will.
I just wanted to share some "lessons learned" from my experience.
So far I like the modification and aside from some hicups on my model of truck it was fairly easy to install. I will report back with MPG results as soon as I get them.
I dont know about anyone else with a 98 F150, but so far I have found that it was a mix between a 97 and a 99 model. My radio hook ups were 99 and now I see that my radiator was a 97 model.

Eggggzacytly what I was going to say. They only fit one way. Doesn't sound like it matters now though.
E-Fans
I bought the e-fan kit from summit that was a good bit cheaper and alot nicer too. It took me about 2 hrs to install. Throttle response it better but MPG isnt. If you want more for you money call Summit racing and get the Flex-a-lite kit. Toyer performance seems to be a bit pricey on everything they have.
HI!... I've been running my own DERALE dual 16" fan kit I fabricated up for about 7 years now. No problems here. The fans must be rotated a certain way to fit on the F-150 rad.

Hey guys, this is a little off topic but does anyone know the service life of these fans? Like how many Hours they are made to last? I have the flex a lite fans on my truck and was wondering that...

I don't think anyone can say how long they will last till they up and die on them.
Neal probably has had e-fans on his truck for the longest time. I have had mine on for about 4½ years and I have put them through hell. Mud water you name it.

Its good to hear they take the abuse. I was just wondering about how long they were designed for, as now that i am moving to a really really hot climate i have a feeling my fans will be running 100% of the time at 100% speed. As when my AC is on the fans run at 100% and in Arizona i have a feeling my AC is going to be on just about 100% of the time. haha.

Can they fail? Sure.
Are they likely to fail? Not really, IMHO.

In 11 months I have had one controller go out.
I think you are right
The troyer kits wasnt that bad on price, but I think you are right, someone before me might have swapped out the radiator. I was looking at upgrading it in the future anyway. However, I have all of maintenance records and they dont show a radiator replacement.
I did try rotating the fans and they still did not fit...But hey its in now
I do notice that my air conditioning doesnt blow real cold until the fans kick in. I really need to find that wire!

I broke down and spent the $399 for the factory fit flex-a-lite kit and its wonderful. Took like 45 minutes to install, fit right in, and hasn't missed a lick since. I tried the route neal took, with the derale fans, and those stupid plastic wire tie looking things that stick through the radiator and secure the fans wore a hole in my radiator.
