aftermarket coils vs. chip and/or?

97 4.6 expie, stock except for intake. I was thinking about swapping out the stock coils for aftermarket. She has about 135k on her now, and they are prolly getting a bit weak. So, can I do coils and then a chip, or, I may just leave it like that. Also, thinking of doing dual cat backs, does a chip need to know all of this, or does it somehow work all this out?

Thanks,

TT

I doubt upgrading to new/aftermarket coils would be worth the money. If you start to have coils go bad, then I would consider some aftermarket ones. But dont expect performance gains from them...the stockers work well enough for a stock engine (and just about any bolt on mod).

Getting a chip or tuner is a good idea though. I love mine (XCal 2 from Troyer Performance). For the most part, the intake/exhaust/other minor bolt ons dont do enough to warrant adjusting the chip. But it is something that most tuners will ask (troyer has a worksheet you fill out with this kind of info when you buy the tuner).
